Styling Guide

I BOOKED A SESSION, NOW WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

Here are a few of my favorite combinations for family portraits that compliment my photography style.

  • For the ladies- I always recommend clothing with movement! Such as flowy long dresses, dark skinny jeans with minimal tears and holes, or rompers. Add a cute bow or floppy hat for that extra pop! For a more natural approach create a loose braid, messy bun or add a little beach wave to your hair.
  • For the guys- Suspenders, dark jeans, or khaki bottoms is always a good option! Compliment those nice pants with a good pair of Romeos, solid slip ons, or some stylish high top boots. And stay away from tennis shoes. For the top half, i recommend button ups, flannels, or a layered classic v-neck with a stylish jacket.
  • Colors- Neutrals or Rich tones such as mustard, burgundy, navy, blush, creams, and green. (NO ALL WHITE OR BLACK) You want to compliment each others personal outfits, not look the same.
  • Textures such as Corduroy, denim, velvet, and cotton.
  • Patterns such as subtle floral, and flannel are great.

8 TIPS TO HELP YOU CHOOSE THE PERFECT FAMILY PHOTO OUTFITS.

Be Comfortable!

First and foremost, dress in something you're comfortable in. The more comfortable you are, the more comfortable you'll look in your photos. Blow outs and accidents do happen! I highly recommend arriving a few minutes early to dress your little ones. Let them be comfortable for the travel time (They will be happier, i promise!)

Coordinating Colors....Not matching

There was a time when wearing white t-shirts and matching pants were in, but where is the fun in that? Allow personality! Let the kiddos shine with color, layers, and accessories! Choose a color combination (Pinterest is a great resource) and choose clothes that will fit in that color scheme. Choose 2-3 different colors, mix in patterns with solids to balance out the photo. Bright reds dont photograph well, its best to steer clear. Earthy, jewel, neutral, woodsy, and blush tones photograph well.

Home decor

Do you have bright colors in your home? Neutrals? Is your style Boho, Farmhouse, Urban, Industrial? Since you will have these portraits displayed throughout your house, you want to make sure the colors of your clothes compliment the color scheme you have chosen inside your home!

Accessories!

Accessories add personality and a fun pop to your outfits. Guys wear a jacket with a collar so your lady can tug on it to pull you in close. Earrings for the ladies, so your man can sweep your hair back to show them off! And the kiddos.... how about some cute hats for them to hide behind, or your family favorite quilt to wrap them up in. Family photos are a time to capture who your family is at that time. Most people take family photos in the fall which means there are endless possibilities with accesssories! Consider a fun scarf, knee high socks under your boots, or stylish hats!

Limit Patterns

Its fun to have an outfit in the mix that has all the colors in it. However, Not everyone in the photo should wear patterns as it may distract the final image. Mama's, it can be really helpful to choose what you want to wear first and then build the rest of the family's wardrobe off of that. I like to keep a 1 to 3 ratio.... One pattern for every three people. Not a pattern fan, THATS OK! stick with solid tones!

Say no to Characters & logos

Yes, your kiddos may love mickey mouse, and Cocomelon but you may want to skip over those shirts for your family session. Do you have a teen that loves quotes and logos on shirts? Just like patterns, characters and logos on shirts can be very distracting and can make your photo look too busy.

Location of your session

Dress for the location, keeping season in mind. If we're planning to play around at a pumpkin patch on a crisp fall day, closed-toed shoes and flannels are best. If we're shooting in the heat of the summer, light weight, breathable clothing is highly recommended.

Textures are your friend

Let me real for a second, everyone loves a comfy fitted cotton shirt. However, in photographs I like adding texture and layers. Don't shy away from a variety of both! By adding these materials through your family outfits or your accessories you are adding personality and interest to your photos.
